A few things about Mexico by Björn
Going out
While safety is not a big concern in Merida (safest city in Latin America), please use the usual safety precautions (dont take a lot of cash with you, dont take your original passport but a photocopy, …)
Mexican food is amazing; be adventurous but also here make sure you dont do anything stupid (stuff might be very spicy – first a dragon then a rocket, only go to places that are busy, ...)
Food hygiene is different in Mexico. Try to avoid agua frescas from “local” places. You dont know what water they use. Only have bottled water.
Mexico is the country of tipping. 10 to 15% is standard for food. Even little things usually require tips (e.g. the famous “viene viene” guys that help you parking, the concierge for the luggage, …). So make sure you have change/cash.
For Weddings
Like for going out, it is expected that the guests tip their waiters at the end of the night (at around 200-300 Mexican Pesos per couple - but be the judge of their service).
Mexican weddings are usually lasting pretty long and are heavy on the dancing (so bring comfortable shoes to change at some point)
There is always tons of staff. If you just look like you will need something, there will be someone with you!
It is going to be hotter than February implies so drink enough water and maybe bring a nice hat.
Getting around
Public transport in the major cities is super easy and accessible. Use metro, micro bus or similar. Usually a car is not needed. But be aware that many transport mediums are not on a set schedule and require payment in cash. Between less populated places, the frequency might be very limited so maybe check the next point.
It is always a great idea to get a rental car. But watch out and check reviews first as there are many offers that do not include a mandatory insurance cover that then comes at a hefty price increase. Driving is super easy in Yucatan and most roads are in good condition. Mexico City driving is very different though... it can get hectic. Don't underestimate distances. Apart from Yucatan, Mexico is very mountainous. EU drivers license is generally enough to rent a car and this is one of the best ways to explore the Yucatan peninsula.
Avoid driving by night. You are still a foreigner in Mexico, don't forget.
Ubers are generally very affordable and available in most cities, so get yourself the app.
Avoid taxis and use Ubers instead. Just stay on the safer side.
Good things to have
Insect repellent
Sunscreen
Loperamida or other medicine against Moctezumas revenge (the stomach thing)
Change/cash and maybe a few smaller dollar notes just in case
Get yourself internet with a travel eSIM like Maya, AirSim, AloSim, ...
